If you’ve browsed online for a step ladder, you’ll have noticed that most models are made from one of three different types of materials. The most widely used materials are aluminium, timber, and fibreglass. Which one should you opt for? Read on to find out.

The Aluminium Step Ladder

If you’re on a budget, an aluminium step ladder can be a savvy option. That’s not to say that they’re cheap as chips. However, they’re cheaper than fibreglass ladders.

They’re also lightweight and easy to transport.  This is good news if you’re going to be carrying them to and from your works van and between jobs all day.

As ladders go, an aluminium set will go the distance as long as you look after them. They won’t rot like timber ladders, but they can corrode if they are exposed to the elements.

The Timber Step Ladder

If you want a budget-friendly ladder for some basic DIY jobs around the home, a timber step ladder is a good choice. They are fairly easy to transport, solid, and easy to use. However, wood can rot and warp if it’s exposed to moisture or adverse weather conditions. This can weaken the rungs and make the ladder unsafe to use. Regular maintenance and safety checks are key.

The Fibreglass Step Ladder

If you’re a tradesperson who regularly works in risky areas such as near power cables, a fibreglass ladder is the safest choice. Unlike aluminium, fibreglass doesn’t conduct electricity, so you won’t get any from nasty shocks.

Fibreglass ladders are also super strong and resistant to heat, flames, and weather conditions. This puts them ahead of aluminium and timber ladders in that department.

Whether you’re working indoors or outdoors, fibreglass ladders are up to the job. They won’t rot in the rain like timber, or corrode like aluminium.

Whichever step ladder you choose, the best material for your needs will depend on what you’re going to be using them for. An aluminium step ladder is a good all-rounder for DIY enthusiasts and tradespeople alike. Just make sure you look after it!

If DIY around the home is your bag, a timber step ladder is a good buy. Remember not to leave it out in the rain though.

And while it’s true that fibreglass ladders are often the most pricey, they are the best investment if you’re a tradesperson who uses ladders regularly. Especially in risky conditions.
