As an electrician, you’re not just working with electricity, you’re often working at height as well. To keep things safe, you need the right ladder. What’s the best electrician ladder? Here’s our guide.

Things to Consider About Working With Electricity

Forget Metal Ladders

We’ll say this louder for the people in the back. Metal ladders and electricity DO NOT mix. Metal conducts electricity. If you’re on an aluminium ladder and you accidentally make contact with a loose wire, you’re at risk of electrocution.

Don’t Work Too Close to Overhead Power Lines

The Health and Safety Executive recommends that you shouldn’t work within 6 metres of a live uninsulated power line. If your electrician’s ladder touches a power line, it could be catastrophic.

Be Aware of the Risk of Arc Flashes

Even if you keep your ladder away from power lines, there is a risk of what’s called an arc flash. An arc flash is an explosion caused by the release of electrical energy from an electrical system. These explosions create extremely high temperatures and can result in severe burns and lung damage. Even though the risk of this happening is fairly low, it still pays to use the right PPE and electrician ladder.

So What is the Best Electrician Ladder?

Wooden ladders are a good option as wood doesn’t conduct electricity. However, the all-around best electrician ladder is a fibreglass ladder. They are strong and lightweight so they’re easy to move and transport. Then there’s the clincher. They don’t conduct electricity and most are non-conductive up to a whopping 30,000 volts. You can use them indoors or outdoors and they won’t rust or corrode.

Think About Safety First

Whatever the electrician ladder you opt for, remember to think about safety first when you’re working at height. Position your ladder on a solid, flat, and stable surface. Always maintain three points of contact with the ladder at all times. Easy points to remember but it’s also easy to forget when you’re doing the job day in, day out.
