When you’re buying a ladder, you don’t just need to know which one is right for the job. You need to know your ladder standards as well. So what is a class 1 ladder? Here’s what you need to know.

UK ladder standards have changed

Previously there were three different classifications of portable ladders. These were:

  • Class 1 ladder: Ladders for heavy-duty industrial applications such as those used on construction sites.
  • Class 2 (or EN131) ladder: Ladders used for lighter tasks in trade and retail.
  • Class 3 ladder: Domestic DIY use.

However, these standards have now changed. The classifications have been simplified and now only two exist:

  • EN131 Professional Standard- metal ladders for industrial, trade, and business use.
  • EN131 Non-Professional: Only suitable for home use.

The weight limit of each classification is set at 150kg.

What does EN131 mean?

So the class 1 ladder and the class 3 ladder are no more*. So what exactly does EN131 mean?

EN131 is an EU certification for portable steps and ladders. The biggest thing it does is improve safety. It means that every ladder that’s sold in the UK or EU has been made and tested to high and specific standards.

For example, ladders over 3m in length must now have a stabiliser bar at the bottom which makes the ladder wider and more stable.

And as far as testing goes, both professional and non-professional ladders are subject to slip testing and torsion tests to ensure maximum safety. However, as you would expect, professional ladders are tested around five times more than non-professional ladders.

*class 1 still applies to trestles, just not portable ladders.

How can you tell if a product is compliant with EN131?

Every portable ladder* on the market should be tested, certified, and labelled as EN131 compliant. If it’s not, ask the retailer if you can see a certificate.

*Warehouse steps and loft ladders as well as step stools have their own classifications which are (EN14975) and (EN14183) respectively.

Do I really need to buy an EN131-certified ladder?

EN131 is a safety standard, not a legal obligation. However, if you don’t use ladders that meet the standards and there’s an accident, you could be in trouble. ‘Does this ladder comply with current safety standards?’ is the first question health and safety will ask!
