If you’ve ever had roof repairs, you’ll know they aren’t cheap. That’s why it pays to look after it. The average roof should last decades if it’s well-maintained. Here’s why you should inspect your roof and how often you need to do it.
Why do you need to inspect your roof?
Regular roof inspections help you identify issues before they become a more serious problem. They can also help keep your roof in good condition and prolong its life.
Check your roof every season
You should inspect your roof at least once per year, but ideally every season. Different seasonal weather conditions can cause issues with your roof. Heavy summer downpours can damage the flashing which can cause water damage in your home. In the autumn, fallen leaves and other debris can clog your gutters. Strong winds can dislodge roof tiles. Before you know it, you have a serious leak that’s expensive to remedy.
What should you look for when you inspect your roof
- Look for any visible signs of water damage, especially after a spell of heavy rain or snow, or after a storm.
- When you inspect your roof, check for signs of moss or algae growth. When they are present, this means moisture which can seep into your roof, weaken it, and cause it to rot.
- Check the roof’s general condition. Are there any visible leaks or cracks? How about missing tiles? Does the roof appear to be sagging or drooping?
Basic roof maintenance
Prevention is better than cure when it comes to looking after your roof. As well as making time to inspect your roof regularly, you should carry out basic maintenance.
- Clean leaves and debris from your roof, especially after a storm. If you leave the leaves to rot, mould can grow which can weaken the roof.
- Clear debris from your gutters. This stops water from draining away which can result in costly water damage to your home.
- If you have trees in your garden, keep them trimmed back. Chop off any unstable or rotten branches which could damage your roof during a storm.
The golden rule: Inspect and maintain your roof safely
When you inspect your roof or maintain it, do it safely. That means investing in the right ladder for the job. A roof ladder or extension ladder will protect you and your roof while you work safely at height.
